HUUM and Harvia are the two sauna heater brands our customers ask about most. One is a heritage Finnish manufacturer, the other a newer Estonian brand built around app control and modern design. Both make heaters strong enough to anchor a serious home sauna. Choosing between them is where many buyers hesitate.
We sell both HUUM and Harvia, and customers ask us to help them choose every week. There is no wrong answer between the two, but there is usually a right one for your space. Below, we break down company background, stone capacity, controls, running cost, warranty coverage, and steam quality, with real numbers behind each point.
The short comparison, before the detail:
| HUUM | Harvia | |
|---|---|---|
| Country of origin | Estonia | Finland |
| Company age | Newer, entered Estonia's business register in 2013 | Established, founded in 1950 |
| Control system | HUUM's own UKU system, app controlled | Harvia's own Xenio system, WiFi enabled |
| Standard residential warranty (currently published, subject to change) | 3 years | 2 years, extendable to 3 |
How Are HUUM and Harvia Different as Companies?
Harvia is the older, Finnish heritage brand, while HUUM is the newer, Estonian challenger. Harvia's founder, Tapani Harvia, established the company in Finland in 1950, and it has built sauna heaters there ever since.1 HUUM's story starts later: the company finished its first heater design in 2012, then entered Estonia's official business register the following year, on October 30, 2013.2
Neither history tells you which heater fits your sauna better. Both companies have had decades, or in HUUM's case just over a decade, to refine a product line that competes on the same shelf.
How Much Stone Capacity Does Each Brand Offer?
Both brands offer heaters across a wide stone capacity range, from compact wall units to heavy commercial-grade models. Harvia's electric line spans roughly 27 pounds of stones in its lightest model up to more than 220 pounds in its commercial-grade Club line.3 HUUM's range runs narrower per model but covers similar ground: the DROP series holds about 121 pounds of stones across every wattage option from 4.5 to 9 kilowatts,4 and the HIVE series holds about 551 pounds across every wattage option from 12 to 18 kilowatts.5
| Heater Line | Brand | Approx. Stone Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Vega Compact | Harvia | ~27 lbs |
| DROP | HUUM | ~121 lbs |
| Cilindro, Spirit, Virta | Harvia | 110–176 lbs |
| Club | Harvia | 132–220+ lbs |
| HIVE | HUUM | ~551 lbs |
More stone mass holds and releases heat more evenly. That is why stone capacity matters more than wattage alone once you compare specific models. See current HUUM sauna heaters and Harvia sauna heaters for the full model lineup and capacity by room size.
What Control Systems Come With Each Brand?
HUUM heaters run on HUUM's own UKU control system, and Harvia heaters run on Harvia's own Xenio control system. HUUM's UKU system is available with Glass, Classic, or Wood panel styles, plus a dedicated HUUM app for remote and WiFi control.5 Harvia's Xenio line includes WiFi-enabled units such as the CX170 and CX110, controlled through Harvia's own remote app.6
| HUUM | Harvia | |
|---|---|---|
| Control system | UKU | Xenio |
| Panel styles | Glass, Classic, Wood | WiFi-enabled units, including CX170 and CX110 |
| Remote control | HUUM's own app | Harvia's own app |
Both systems handle scheduling, remote start, and temperature monitoring from a phone.
What Does It Cost to Run and Install a HUUM or Harvia Heater?
Running either brand costs a few dollars per session, and installing either brand usually adds a few hundred dollars in electrical work. A 6-kilowatt heater uses about 7 to 9 kilowatt-hours per two-hour heat-and-bathe session, and an 8-kilowatt heater uses about 9 to 13 kilowatt-hours, according to Harvia's own published figures.7 At the current national average residential electricity rate of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour, that works out to roughly $1.28 to $2.38 per session depending on heater size, a figure calculated from those two numbers rather than a single published one.8 Installation adds to that: hiring a licensed electrician typically runs $300 to $800 total, based on standard rates of $50 to $100 per hour.9
Neither brand carries a meaningfully different running cost. The heater's wattage and your local electricity rate decide that.
What Warranty Coverage Comes With Each Brand?
Harvia and HUUM both back their residential heaters with a multi-year warranty, though the standard terms differ. Warranty terms are set by each manufacturer and can change, so treat the numbers below as each brand's most recently published terms, not a permanent guarantee. As of Harvia's currently published terms, its standard warranty for residential electric heaters runs 2 years, extendable to 3 years total if the heater is registered within 30 days of purchase.10 As of HUUM's currently published terms, its standard warranty runs 3 years.11
| HUUM | Harvia | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard warranty (as currently published) | 3 years | 2 years |
| Extended warranty | Not applicable | 3 years total, with registration within 30 days of purchase |
HUUM's published standard term currently starts longer. Harvia closes most of that gap with a free registration step. Confirm the current terms directly with HUUM or Harvia, or ask our team, before you buy, since manufacturer warranty policies can change after this article is published.
Why Does Steam Quality Feel Different Between the Two?
Steam quality comes down to löyly, the steam released when water hits hot stones. Stone mass determines how evenly that steam builds and settles.
- Löyly is “the spirit or steam released by casting water onto a stack of heated stones,” described as the heart of the sauna experience by UNESCO's cultural heritage listing for Finnish sauna culture.12
A HIVE's 551 pounds of stone holds and releases löyly more gradually than a Vega Compact's 27 pounds. Neither is the wrong choice. They are built for different rooms and different session styles. Matching stone mass to your actual room size matters more than picking a brand on reputation alone.
Is Now a Good Time to Buy a Sauna Heater?
Demand for home saunas is real and growing. That makes this a reasonable time to buy from either brand.
- The US sauna market was sized at $437.4 million in 2025 and is projected to grow at a 6.5 percent compound annual rate through 2030, according to market research firm Technavio.13
Growing demand does not change which heater is right for your room. It just means fewer buyers are waiting to decide.
Does SaunaLife Sell Its Own Sauna Heaters?
SaunaLife is known primarily for complete sauna cabins and kits, not standalone sauna heaters, so it does not fit a direct heater-to-heater comparison against HUUM or Harvia the way those two brands compare to each other. A SaunaLife kit does not lock you into a specific heater brand: you choose your own heater when you buy one. That means everything in this comparison, stone capacity, control systems, running cost, and warranty terms, still applies whether you are building a custom room from scratch or starting from a SaunaLife kit.
If you are weighing a complete SaunaLife kit against building your own room around a HUUM or Harvia heater, our team can walk you through both paths in a consultation.
What About Wood-Burning Models?
Both brands sell wood-burning heaters too. The chimney hardware is an added cost worth planning for if you choose that option.
- HUUM's chimney kits run $1,205 to $1,701, and Harvia's chimney kits run $1,415 to $1,487, plus $415 to $633 for modular extensions, on our own current chimney and chimney kit pricing.
Wood-burning changes the venting requirements regardless of brand, so budget for that cost before you commit to either heater.
Which Brand Should You Choose?
Your priorities decide the right brand: Harvia for proven Finnish engineering, or HUUM for Estonian design and a currently longer standard warranty term.
- Choose Harvia if you want proven Finnish engineering and heater lines spanning compact wall units to commercial-grade floor models.3
- Choose HUUM if you want Estonian design, a standard warranty term that currently runs longer, and app control built around HUUM's own ecosystem.
Stone capacity decides whether a heater performs well in your specific room. If you are still unsure which fits your space, our sauna heater calculator factors in your room's dimensions and recommends a size, regardless of brand.
