Traditional Saunas

A traditional Finnish-style sauna is a dry-heat bath where bathers sit in a wood-lined room at temperatures of 80--110 °C (176--230 °F). Humidity is manually controlled by pouring water onto heated stones. The core experience alternates between intense heat that generates steam (löyly) and rapid cooling in cold water or snow. There are saunas for both outdoors and indoors.

How do I know which heater I need for my sauna?

Heater size depends on your sauna's cubic footage, insulation, and any glass or outdoor exposure, not just how many people it fits.

Should I choose an indoor or outdoor sauna?

It usually comes down to available space, installation requirements, and the experience you want.

Indoor saunas use existing interior space and are conveniently accessible from inside your home.

Outdoor saunas free up interior space, can often accommodate larger designs, and create a separate backyard sauna experience.

Outdoor installations may require additional site preparation, such as a suitable foundation and electrical work, depending on the sauna and location.
How much maintenance does a sauna require?

Less than most people expect.

A quick wipe-down after each use, occasional deep cleaning of benches and floors, and checking door seals or ventilation a few times a year covers most saunas.

Both electric and wood-burning sauna heaters require periodic inspection and replacement of the sauna stones over time.

Wood-burning heaters also require regular ash removal and chimney maintenance.

Electric saunas are generally lower-maintenance overall, since there's no wood-burning cleanup involved.
Does the type of wood matter?

Yes. Cedar resists rot and moisture and has a distinct aroma; spruce offers a clean, bright look at a more accessible price; and aspen is a hypoallergenic wood that stays cooler to the touch, making it excellent for benches.

All three are durable choices, the right one usually comes down to look, scent, and budget. Often, we also see thermally modified wood types for the outer walls of the outdoor sauna.
What's the difference between spruce and thermo-spruce wood?

Untreated spruce is a light, affordable wood, but it naturally releases resin at high heat, which can feel sticky and needs more upkeep.

Thermo-spruce is the same wood treated with heat alone, no chemicals, which removes the resin, darkens the color to a rich golden-brown, and makes it far more resistant to moisture and warping. Thermo-spruce costs more upfront but needs less maintenance over time.
How long should a sauna session last, and how often should I use it?

Most sessions run 15 to 20 minutes. If you're new to sauna, start with 2 to 3 sessions a week and build up from there as your body adjusts to the heat. Regular users often go 3 to 5 times a week. Always listen to your body, and check with your doctor first if you have any cardiovascular or health conditions.
